What is it? Why attend?

The Steel City PyBake is a set of student code challenges, aimed at building student's skillset and confidence in using Python. Participants will tackle two consecutive levels of coding challenges with support from industry experts available at the midpoint on the Monday.

  • Level 1 - "Warmup" - a simple set of 9 Python challenges that can be easily tackled. No engineering experience necessary.
  • Level 2 - Bridge Builder - A more advanced version of the Structures PyCon Lab. Build the cheapest bridge! On your own, or as part of a team. Cheapest working design wins!

Participants can enter solo or as part of a team. Team size is capped at 5 people, however.

When and where is it?

The Steel City PyBake will be held during PyCon 2024, in Pittsburgh.

We will kick-off the PyBake during the expo opening (Thursday, May 16 - 630pm). At this time you will receive access to the challenges. You have one week to complete the challenges (until Midnight ET, Thursday, May 23).

We will hold an in-person check-in on Monday, May 20 from 1 to 5pm. This event will have prizes and hands-on help from Ansys experts, to help you with any questions you may have about the challenges.

All students who attend The Steel City PyBake will receive PyCon passes that provide them full conference access (May 15-24) including access to keynotes, talks, the expo floor, and the job fair.

Who can attend?

The event is limited to students attending Carnegie Mellon University or University of Pittsburgh. Students must be on-site at PyCon 2024 to participate.

This event is open to students of any level, but we do have limited space and registration is required. Students or educators wanting to participate can express their interest by filling out the form linked at the top of this page.
