What is it? Why should my class attend?

The Salt Lake Py Bake is a set of mentored student code challenges, aimed at building secondary school student's skillset and confidence in using Python. Students will be mentored though gated coding challenges by industry experts, with three tiers of difficulty available:

  • Introductory - students who have very basic coding experience
  • Intermediate - students with coding experience, but not necessarily in Python
  • Advanced - students who are comfortable using (and have experience writing programs in) Python.

When and where is it?

The Salt Lake Py Bake will be held on Monday, April 24 from 1300 to 1700, during PyCon 2023, a user conference hosted by the Python Software Foundation to engage Python users and community members. All students who attend The Salt Lake Py Bake (and the educators who bring them) will also receive PyCon passes that provide them full conference access (April 20-23) including access to keynotes, talks, the expo floor, and the job fair.

Who can attend?

This event is open to all Utah secondary school classrooms, but we do have limited space and registration is required. Educators can express their interest by filling out the form linked at the top of this page. While the challenges are intended for High School students, we also welcome Middle School classrooms with an interest in Python.

Giveaways

All registered students will receive a t-shirt and laptop sticker(s) for attending. Students will have a chance to win prizes for prowess, speed, creativity, and beyond - not all prizes will be skill-based, to give all students a chance at bringing home a larger prize such as a skateboard deck or a mechanical keyboard.
